One of the first post of this blog was just the announcement of the introduction of the new digital mixer Allen & Heath's BPM event to London in his time had been given a general description of the product you can read in our previous article . Now a few months later came the first models with the consequent possibility to try the product. Here are the first impressions after a bench test. 
The mixer is lighter than expected and comes with a special bag for transport. The design is very nice and is entirely in satin alloy with a robust and solid. The components is well made and is the same for the other products except Xone fader sliding but not too much to get the right grip. When you turn on the mixer is immediately struck by the amount of lights on the surface that appears unusual compared with an ergonomics standard settings of the controls. A rotary potentiometer at the top of each channel allows the input selection to bind to the channel in addition to a small switch that selects the type (analog, digital or sound card). Oltre alla possibilità di attivare i filtri digitali su ogni canale sono presenti anche i classici filtri analogici che hanno reso celebre la serie xone posti ai lati dei fader dei canali come sul classico xone92. Risulta facilissimo fare una prova per avere un paragone sulla qualità dei filtri digitali che si comportano molto bene chiudendo le frequenze (cutoff) con un range leggermente più ampio anche se con un suono meno "pieno" ma più brillante.
Sotto l'equalizzazione troviamo il cuore creativo del mixer: per ogni canale è presente un'ampia sezione per il controllo del loop e degli effetti. Il loop è tagliato perfettamente in battuta e tramite l'apposito potenziometro a scatti si può selezionare la lunghezza desiderata (indicata dai numeri di beat) andando poi a effettuare i tagli sui valori di nota per effettuare il classico "roll". By opting for such a delay, you can choose between 5-6 different versions each with features specific manipulation of the signal. Also in case of use of a delay knob "expression" controls the amount of feedback while the dry / wet runs the signal-to-effect. Very interesting is the way 'Kill Send' active on delay and reverb: you set pressing the button at the same time the effect + FX ADJ knob to the right of this screen on mixer. In this mode when you rotate the knob dry / wet on the last portion of the arc marked in orange closes the original signal (send), leaving only the gradient of the feedback delay or reverb. LCD screen you can see the bpm and the type of effect on each active channel. Holding down the FX ADJ si visualizza invece al posto dei bpm un piccolo grafico per la gestione di un ulteriore parametro dell'effetto editabile tramite il potenziometro stesso. Nell'esempio corrente si attiva un filtro (bassa alto o passa banda) con cui regolare un cutoff sul delay in uso. A seconda del tipo di delay cambierà anche il tipo di filtro che si attiva. In generale per ogni effetto le knob 'expression' e 'FX ADJ' sono assegnate alla gestione di parametri diversi.
Il suono del xone db4 è di qualità decisamente elevata, a paragone con il Denon dnx1700 è leggermente meno saturo ma più morbido, con un po' meno spinta ma con una più piacevole diffusione delle basse frequenze, sicuramente più coinvolgente anche se meno brillante dei mixer Pioneer digitali. Rispetto invece alla serie xone analogica o agli Ecler serie Nuo si sente ancora il limite di questa categoria di prodotti che inevitabilmente ha un range di frequenza leggermente più ridotto e una dinamica più piatta, ma si deve ammettere che nel panorama dei mixer digitali attuali il db4 si distingue per il timbro sonoro completo e pulito, Allen&Heath ha posto come sempre molta attenzione alla cura della qualità audio. La tecnologia Quad FX Core sviluppata per i banchi digitali Live regala poi un'effettistica estremamente definita. Gli effetti non sono mai eccessivamente invasivi e, soprattutto nelle modulazioni e nelle distorsioni, devono essere opportunamente scelti e dosati.
