The default is to mount the mixer's master output and then connect to the output of the speakers. This configuration has two major drawbacks: first the effect can not be assigned to each mixer channel but you can generally only process the output signal, the second may be suitable in a home environment with home stereo, but absolutely can not be used higher on a plant because it does not si ha nessun controllo sulla distorsione e sui picchi di segnale. 
Il metodo più corretto è di utilizzare le mandate (e ritorni) effetti dei mixer: t ramite l'uscita "send" il segnale viene inviato all'effetto che dopo averlo processato lo rispedisce al mixer nell'ingresso "return". Il mixer gestisce il routing del segnale permettendo l'assegnazione dell'effetto a ogni singolo canale tramite appositi potenziometri o pulsanti . Ovviamente bisogna avere un mixer dj con tali caratteristiche, quindi è necessario valutare anche questo tipo di aspetto quando si sceglie un mixer, che sia analogico o digitale. Ogni mixer gestisce in modo diverso le unità effetti esterne, quindi se si è interessati a questa caratteristica e bene informarsi in modo preciso prima dell'acquisto. Su alcuni prodotti il segnale processato viene semplicemente aggiunto a quello originale (quindi la "mandata" massima dell'effetto sarà al 50%) rendendo inutile l'uso delle modulazioni o dei filtri (segnale originale + segnale filtrato= segnale originale con leggera risonanza), altri invece lo sostituiscono completamente rendendo meno intuitivo l'uso dei delay e dei riverberi. 
Le tipologie di mandate effetti sono 3: post fader, pre fader, insert.
POST FADER: l'effetto viene sommato al segnale del canale solo se il volume è alzato, solitamente si trova un potenziometro (a volte un pulsante) su ogni canale per permettere di inviare "una certa quantità di segnale" all'unità effetti, è la soluzione migliore se vogliamo aggiungere un riverbero alla voce o se inseriamo ad esempio un ping-pong delay su un brano, inoltre possiamo utilizzare lo stesso effetto su più canali contemporaneamente.
PRE FADER: simile al post fader ma il segnale viene inviato all'unità effetti esterna indipendentemente alla posizione del fader del canale, solo in base a quanta "mandata" viene inviata tramite l'apposito potenziometro. Possiamo quindi sentire il segnale processato con l'effetto anche con il volume del brano originale completamente chiuso. Utile per creare delle intro. 
INSERT: il segnale del canale viene completamente sostituito dal segnale processato dall'effetto. Questa è la soluzione migliore se vogliamo utilizzare filtri, modulazioni (tipo phaser o flanger) o distorsioni. 
Ogni casa costuttrice offre una diversa gestione degli effetti, giusto per dare un'idea sui club mixer più noti: il sistema pre/post fader è in uso su Allen&Heath xone 92 - xone 62 - xone 4D, Ecler Nuo2.0 - Nuo3.0 - Nuo4.0, il sistema insert è invece quello utilizzato da Allen&Heath xone42 - xone22, Pioneer djm700 - djm800 - djm2000, Ecler Evo4 e da alcuni mixer Denon. In realtà Denon offre often unable to choose whether to have the effect as an insert or post fader. To avoid mistakes (often because the manufacturer 's instructions are vague) is advisable to inquire specifically and even better to make a "field test". 
Today there are several multi-external effects on the market, the most famous are the Korg KP3, mini-KP, Quad, and the Pioneer EFX500 efx1000 and Roland sp404 and sp505. Sometimes the effects are also used if the software used to process includes an external signal through the sound card (this is the case of Ableton and some VST). The massive use of digital mixers and dj software, usually already very rich indeed, decreased the use of multi-launched external effects but rather the use of individual effects, often originating from the world of guitarists. This is because the embedded processors of the mixer and the algorithms in the software does not always meet the most demanding DJs and must therefore be to select one or two external effects of quality. To give a practical idea: Use for general convenience, for example, some of these effects in Traktor, but the software filters are discarded in favor of the analog or digital mixer and the effect on the most widely used (eg delay, very "trendy" in recent years) you purchase an external effect of analog or digital quality (Boss, TC Eletronics, Moog ...).
